Stuck for something to do this weekend? The list of the films showing at
Manchester Showcase Cinema
can be found on this page, and won't differ much from what's on in the rest
of the country.
The new films out include: Basic Instinct 2, Failure To Launch, Firewall,
The Shaggy Dog and Yours, Mine and Ours.
There's the Kaiser Chiefs, there's the Arctic Monkeys and then there's
Morning Runner, but does all music that glitters from the North turn out to
be gold?
DVDfever.co.uk reviewer Elly Roberts
tells all.
DVDfever.co.uk reviewer Dan Owen returns with his
regular movie news section which looks at future releases and features US and UK
top 10 cinema listings, UK release dates, websites and trailers.
Over the years she's worked with the likes of Luther Vandross, Cat Stevens,
Oasis, Muddy Waters and Rod Stewart, and this time she returns for a live gig
at Ronnie Scott's in London, as detailed by
DVDfever.co.uk reviewer Elly Roberts.
The original 1980s arcade game was a revelation, and for the follow-up to
arrive on the Xbox in 2004 was a godsend, so surely this latest release
should capitalise on that, right? Well, it should but it doesn't. Find out
why...
She's in the same mould as Norah Jones and Katie Melua, but how much
longer will the public be prepared to buy CDs by those who just provide
such radio-friendly, but unchallenging, material. As long as the press big
them up for?
DVDfever.co.uk reviewer Elly Roberts
puts this record on.
Thirteen is definitely lucky for some with this collection of episodes for
the complete Trumpton and its inhabitants including Nick Fisher, Miss Lovelace,
Mrs Cobbitt, the Mayor, Hugh, Pugh, Barney McGrew, Cuthbert, Dibble and Grub.
Forty years on and this is the first time the whole lot have been released
on DVD.
One that might do well on the Radio 2 playlist according to
DVDfever.co.uk reviewer Elly Roberts,
who puts this band in the same category as Coldplay, Keane and Athlete,
but can they achieve the same success?

NEWS: Foreigner go on tour in June and July...
WOLVERHAMPTON * LONDON * MANCHESTER
!! WAITING FOR A CONCERT LIKE THIS !!
Foreigner return to the UK for three concerts, their first visit since l995
with The Doobie Brothers. Formed in 1976, Foreigner is no stranger to
global success since their debut self-titled album in 1977 until the present
day. The band’s mix of blues, rock and pop has cemented their position as
one of the most successful rock acts in the world. Their unique songwriting
ability spawning hits from the quintessential hard rock of Cold As Ice,
Hot Blooded and Urgent through to the heart rending beauty of Waiting
For a Girl Like You and the magnificence of I Want To Know What Love Is.
"I had no idea at the beginning what Foreigner would become," Mick Jones
reflects. "It's amazing. Back when I started the band, I was at a crossroads
in my life, whether I was going to carry on in music or get a real job. So
thirty years later, we've done pretty well for ourselves. What's been great
is that I've realized that the music has touched a lot of people worldwide.
Unwittingly we've weaved into the fabric of people's lives. That our music
has brought a lot of comfort and happiness is one of the best rewards. It's
remarkable when you set out to write the songs you have no idea where
they'll lead to."
Now in 2006, it feels like the first time … again! Foreigner is celebrating
the fourth decade with an exciting new line-up led by the group’s creative
brainchild, chief songwriter, musician and producer, Mick Jones. The new
line-up includes veteran members Jeff Jacobs on keyboards and Tom Gimbel on
rhythm guitar, saxaphone and flute PLUS new recruits Jeff Pilson on bass,
Jason Bonham on drums and Kelly Hanson taking the vocal helm.
Jeff Pilson is best known for his work with Dokken, whilst Jason Bonham, son
of the late John Bonham of Led Zeppelin, is one of rock’s most ferocious
drummers achieving international acclaim with his bands, Bonham and Virginia
Wolf. Kelly Hansen, the former frontman for the late '80s/early '90s
group, Hurricane provides a new excitement to the older classic material.
"This new band is really enthusiastic and very committed to reestablishing
Foreigner as a major force in 2006" says Jones. "We have great musicians in
this line-up plus we have a whole lot of fans that haven't seen us for a
long long time. So this is the beginning of a new phase in Foreigner. I
really feel the strength of the music is in the songs and this band is a
very exciting line-up that will definitely deliver it. Plus on a personal
note I am excited to be playing back home in the U.K. , it’s been too long!"

A new Stevie Wonder in the making: Raul Midon on CD...

Jack Bauer's about to have another bad day in 24: The Game on PS2...
Released this Friday:
The TV series, first broadcast on BBC2, then on Sky One, is nothing short
of a revelation and a fantastic television experience, even if the scripts
are a tad far-fetched.
Of course, there's nothing more a fan like myself would want a crack at and
that's to be Jack Bauer for the day, and now you can be - literally, but
how does it fare with the controller in your hand?
24: The Game
is online and out this Friday on PS2.
Donald Fagen completes his solo trilogy on CD...
Released today:
In 1973 a lot of things happened. I turned 1 year old, DCI Sam Tyler went back
in time and the BBC made a TV show about it, and
DVDfever.co.uk reviewer Elly Roberts
started a love affair with the music of Steely Dan.
The musical genius of one of its members, Donald Fagen, continues in this
CD.

With this Big Country, memories stay with you, on DVD...
"In a Big Country, dreams stay with you...", was the start of the chorus
for one of the most memorable tracks from the early 80s, but as the decade
was drawing to a close their hits were starting to dry up and, sadly, lead
singer Stuart Adamson died of an apparent suicide in 2001.
Relive the good days, however, as this DVD comprises of over 3 hours with two
concerts from 1986 and 1991, brought to you by
DVDfever.co.uk reviewer Elly Roberts.
Get some '60s influences with Kelley Stoltz on CD...
DVDfever.co.uk reviewer Elly Roberts
calls this man the "San Fran one-man orchestra" with influences that include
The Beatles and The Beach Boys over 13 tracks, which certainly seems like a
lucky number for this man.
Go covert with the Special Ops in Black on Xbox...
Every once in a while a game comes along that promises to completely redefine
its genre, this one being a first-person shooter. This one doesn't quite
do that but it is a very engaging game that gets under your skin and gives
you that "just one more go" feeling before you realise it.
There's not a hint of Liverpudlian singer Colin Vearncombe warbling on about
his "Wonderful Life" in this 'Black', although during the game you can listen
to the track if you have it on your Xbox's hard drive.
DVDfever.co.uk reviewer Elly Roberts
met and saw James Blunt live in Manchester last April before his anti-love
anthem You're Beautiful became the hit of the summer, so how did
his latest gig go down following squillions of album sales and loads of
awards since?

DVD and Game highlights out now and shortly...
A few highlights that are well worth splashing out your moolah on out now or shortly.
For each one that's of interest, click on the image for more info on Amazon:
The Full Monty Special Edition is out this week on DVD (£15.99, Fox).
Dole queue, Job Club, domestic discord - the world is falling apart for six unemployed Sheffield steelworkers.
But one of them has had enough. Determined to beat the system, Gaz (Robert Carlyle) hatches a plan that will
make him and his friends serious rich - and quickly! He convinces them that a strip routine will bring in the
punters, especially when that act reveals the ultimate - the full monty!
As our local heroes prepare for the big night word gets round that a very special act is about to storm the
clubs of steel city. Director Peter Cattaneo combines black comedy, roaring hilarity and all the absurdity,
heartache and pathos of six men trying to keep body, soul and dignity together. Well, just about!
The most successful British film of all time, The Full Monty also boasts a superb soundtrack, with hits by
Hot Chocolate and Tom Jones.
The extras are as follows:
Disc One: Commentary by Director Peter Cattaneo and Actor Mark Addy. Commentary by Producer Uberto Pasolini. 10 deleted scenes with optional commentary. TV ads. Music Machine function, which enables you to just watch the songs.
Disc Two: Making Of featurettes: Development (Script/Director/Sheffield), Production (Score/Brass Band/Song and Dance/Editing/English Language), The Success and its Aftermath featurette. The British Film Industry in the 90s featurette.
A History of Violence (£29.99, Entertainment in Video) is out on March 20th.
Tom Stall (Viggo Mortensen) is living a happy and quiet life with his lawyer wife (Maria Bello) and their two
children in the small town of Millbrook, Indiana, but one night their idyllic existence is shattered when
Tom foils a vicious attempted robbery in his diner. Sensing danger, he takes action and saves his customers
and friends in the self-defence killings of two-sought-after criminals.
Heralded as a hero, Tom’s life is changed overnight, attracting a national media circus, which forces him into
the spotlight. Uncomfortable with his new found celebrity, Tom tries to return to the normalcy of his ordinary
life only to be confronted by a mysterious and threatening man (Ed Harris) who arrives in town believing Tom
is the man who’s wronged him in the past. As Tom and his family fight back against this case of mistaken
identity and struggle to cope with their changed reality, they are forced to confront their relationships
and the divisive issues which surface as a result.
Extras: Acts of Violence. Scene 44 – Deleted Scene. The Unmaking of Scene 44. Violence’s History: United
States Version Vs International Version. Too Commercial for Cannes. Feature Commentary with David Cronenberg.
Theatrical Trailer.
The Constant Gardener (£19.99, Universal) is out on March 13th.
In a remote area of Northern Kenya, activist Tessa Quayle (Rachel Weisz) is found brutally murdered. Tessa's
travelling companion, an African doctor, appears to have fled the scene, and the evidence points to a crime
of passion. Members of the British High Commission in Nairobi assume that Tessa's widower, their mild-mannered
and un-ambitious colleague Justin Quayle (Ralph Fiennes) will leave the matter to them, but they could not
be more wrong.
Haunted by remorse and jarred by rumours of his late wife's infidelities, Quayle surprises
everyone by embarking on a personal odyssey that will take him across three continents to learn the
horrifying truth of his wife's death. Using his privileged access to diplomatic secrets, he will risk
his own life, stopping at nothing to uncover and expose the truth - a conspiracy more far-reaching and
deadly than Quayle could ever have imagined.
Based on John Le Carre's novel, The Constant Gardener is a breathtaking yet tragic love story told in
retrospect and set against the political backdrop of an economic pharmaceutical conspiracy feasting upon
the low value of life in Africa. Shifting back and forth, the romance between Justin and Tessa is
wonderfully portrayed, building a vivid, gripping and heightened, yet justified, paranoia as the film develops.
Extras: Embracing Africa: Filming in Kenya. John Le Carré: From Page to the Screen. Anatomy of
a Global Thriller : Behind The Scenes of the Constant Gardener. Extended Scene : Haruma - Play
in Kibera. Deleted Scenes.

daughter Elizabeth. The domestic staff are headed by Hudson the Butler, a conservative and proper Scot who
has to contend with the "below stairs" behaviour of the household staff, amongst them cook Mrs Bridges and

The Property Of A Lady, Your Obedient Servant, Out Of The Everywhere, An Object Of Value, A Special

Redcap: The Complete Second Series contains all thirteen episodes of this series, which has not been seen
since its original transmission, and follows the investigations carried out by Sgt John Mann in places as
far apart as Malaysia, Cyprus, Borneo and Germany. Originally broadcast in 1966.
King Solomon's Mines (£9.99, Network) is out on March 13th.
The classic 1937 movie starring Paul Robeson and Cedric Hardwicke.
Maid Marian and Her Merry Men Series 1 (£16.99, Eureka) is out on March 20th.
Imagine that The Merry Men are as thick as one short plank, Robin Hood is a vapid, fashion-conscious airhead
from the village of Kensington and Maid Marian, feisty, idealistic and covered in Save the Whale badges is
their leader. That’s Maid Marian and Her Merry Men, the cult BBC Children’s TV show of the early 90’s.
King John is a fat bullying oaf, the Sheriff of Nottingham’s as bossy and incompetent as the worst teacher in
your school, and the Norman army comprises Gary and Graeme, two educationally-challenged private soldiers who
ought to be committing vile acts of violence for the Sheriff but unfortunately they’re too soft.
Extras: Audio Commentary Episode 1 – Tony Robinson. Quiz – Written by Tony Robinson. Maid Marian Karaoke. Trailer. How the Germans so it... Exclusive Booklet – Written by Tony Robinson, Drawn by Paul Cemmick.
Ginger And Fred (£19.99, Infinity Arthouse) is out on March 13th.
Ginger and Fred is Fellini’s award winning take on the world of small time show business. It skewers the
medium Fellini loved to hate with a behind-the-scenes view of a variety show broadcast. Two former dancers
from the 1940s, Ginger (Giulietta Masina) and Fred (Marcello Mastroianni), who imitated the dance routines
of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, reunite after retiring for over 20 years...
Extras: La Felliniana: Final Show (29:50mins). La Felliniana: Silence (32:41mins). Marcello Mastrioianni:
A Self Portrait (91:55mins).
And The Ship Sails On (£19.99, Infinity Arthouse) is out on March 13th.
Fellini’s And The Ship Sails On is a quirky imaginative fable, following a 1914 ocean voyage to scatter
the ashes of a world famous opera singer (Janet Suzman). The ship’s passengers include aristocrats,
