Ratchet and Clank move to the PSP...
In Ratchet and Clank: Size Matters (£34.99, Sony), which is out now, Sony’s favourite platforming
double act go portable with a game that looks virtually indistinguishable from its big cousin PS2 versions.
It plays just the same too and it’s still got the same great sense of humour that fans love.
Whereas the last few Ratchet & Clank games have become obsessed with online team battles, to the point where
the last one barely featured Clank the robot, this portable version is just like the games of old (although
it does still have a 4 player mode). Ratchet is still armed with his trusty wrench and a whole host of
pleasingly overpowered weapons such as the lacerator gun and the acid bomb glove – you can even switch between
them all using the same selection wheel as the originals. The game has plenty of platform elements as well
too, with Clank again able to help Ratchet glide to safety whilst in the air.
After being reduced to a cameo in Ratchet: Deadlocked, Clank plays a larger role as a solo character in this
new game, with a full wardrobe of robot suits to wear which give him new powers such as a robot flinging
magnetic catapult.
The game isn’t being developed by original developer Insomniac, who are busy on PlayStation 3 first person
shooter Resistance: Fall of Man, but by new company High Impact Game.

movement learns his son has been captured by Axis forces, Rachel is asked to use her feminine charms to

Action aplenty with Crackdown on Xbox 360...
Next up is Crackdown (£39.99, Microsoft), which is out now on the Xbox 360.
Crackdown pushes the action-driving hybrid genre into the next generation with the first ever truly
3-D playground. Gamers will enforce justice by any means necessary in Pacific City, a crime-ridden urban
center built to encourage the exploration of the full width, depth and height of the city. Coupled with
highly innovative co-op gameplay - a genre first - and an interactive world where nearly anything can be
used as a weapon, gamers will be able to create a volatile cocktail of judicial oppression as they clean
up the streets.
Features include:
Brilliant experience from a legendary game designer. From Dave Jones, the creative mastermind behind Grand Theft Auto and Lemmings, comes Crackdown an explosive masterpiece set to define open-world, free-form next-generation gaming.
True next-generation visuals. Harnessing the power of Xbox 360, Crackdown players enforce justice against the backdrop of a crime-ridden metropolis that is massive in scale, monstrous in scope and meticulous in detail. The unique presentation style em
ploys a highly stylized rendering technique that turns the game into a living graphical novel.
Cooperative gameplay for double the mayhem. From the game's initial concept to final design, Real Time Worlds focused on delivering dynamic, engaging cooperative gameplay for double the carnage, action and intensity.
3-D free-form gameplay. For the first time ever, an urban playground has been created to encourage players to explore and exploit the full width, depth and height of a city. Players wage war on the crime syndicates by taking part in high-octane chases
on foot and on wheels while using any appropriate route along, around, across, over, under or through the environment. Freedom abounds because it is up to the player to determine how best to complete the nonlinear objectives in a myriad of wild and creat
ive ways.
Over-the-top action. All strategies and tactics are acceptable, provided players reclaim the streets by unleashing the awesome abilities inside each agent. As players develop and hone their gameplay skills, their agent's genetic tendencies will increa
se, allowing players to realize their agent's full potential. Players will be able to run at dazzling speeds, take death-defying leaps, handle the most incredible weapons, perform impossible vehicular maneuvers, move massive objects and deliver bone-crush
ing blows.
Music as environment. More than 100 licensed tracks, spanning a wide range of styles and genres, give audio identities to characters and locations in Crackdown. The music coupled with a next-generation use of 5.1 surround sound will let gamers know ju
st from the music and sound effects they hear which crime syndicate is headed their way.
The environment as a weapon. Is a character low on ammo? No problem. Thanks to an amazing amount of props and a deep physics system, players can use whatever they can get their hands on as weapons trash cans, vehicles, even people to clean the streets
of crime. In Crackdown the effects of the players' actions stay in place much longer than in other open-environment titles, giving gamers a far greater range of options when setting the scene for mass destruction. If players gather vehicles to create a b
arricade, they will be there when the they return with more. Gamers can create an arrangement of explosives and come back later to set the explosion. Crackdown remembers, and reacts, to the players' actions within the game world.

God of War 2 lashes out on the PS2...
Just out recently is this sequel on the PS2 from Sony (£34.99).
The sleeper hit of 2005 returns with Kratos seeking an escape from his fate as the new god of war. The game’s
even more bloody and violent than before as you take on every mythological monster in the book.
Given the quick turnaround from the first game this isn’t an enormous departure from the original, but that’s
no bad thing with a series as accomplished as this. Kratos has a new range of moves, combos and magic to
unleash but the biggest changes are in the variety of monsters he has to face. The bigger ones can only be
beaten with special button presses, which result in some spectacular finishing moves such as the Cylops whose
eye Kratos plucks out of its socket or the cannon fodder zombies he slices in two.
One of the best sequences though has Kratos leaping off the back of a Pegasus and onto a Gryphon, whose wings
he promptly pulls off before falling to the world below.
Just like the original this game recreates many of the best moments from ancient Greek mythology and movies.
One particularly cool sequence involves trying to get a golden fleece that can reflect back the stony gaze of
a gorgon.

Be a little chef with Diner Dash on the Sony PSP...
Just out now is Diner Dash on the Sony PSP from Eidos (£29.99), the action-puzzle game that
brings out the entrepreneur in all of us.
Poor Flo! Sick and tired of pushing paper in the dreary, bleary-eyed world of finance, she ditched her
desk job and now she's rolling up her sleeves and setting out to build her very own empire of high-class,
five-star restaurants. It won't be easy, though! Flo's on her own now, and heading for the top!
To get there she'll have to start on the ground floor-and she needs your help to build the best
restaurant business possible. Serve your way from a two-table diner to the top of the restaurant ladder
- starting with a run-of-the-mill greasy spoon and ending in a dream restaurant that will take your breath away.
Given that you have to single-handedly wash-up, take orders, cook the food and serve it up, that reminds me
of the time I spent at Little Chef quite some time ago when the manageress would slope off into the back and
chat on the phone for hours, leaving those of us who actually did some work to run the place!

Do battle in The Red Star on the PS2...
This game is out now from Take 2 Interactive (£14.99) and is based on the U.S. comic of the same name
created by Archangel Studios. The art style is groundbreaking and the scope and writing is cutting-edge.
Conceived and drawn by Christian Gossett, The Red Star continues to rocket forwards in its success.
Set around three key main characters, The Red Star tells the tale of an alternate Russia, the URRS,
where massive technology and futuristic weapons are wielded by its army, The Red Fleet. An additional twist
is that magic exists in this world and The Red Fleet employs Sorcerers who can cast protokols (The Red Star
term for spells).
The comic book story focuses on Maya Antares, Sorceress-General for The Red Fleet as she searches for
her husband, Marcus, also a soldier in The Red Fleet who was lost in a disastrous URRS defeat battle
some 10 years before.
Along her journey she is accompanied by her bodyguard, Kyuzo, and she meets Makita, a Nogorkan rebel, who
delivers shocking news of Marcus's survival. Now declared rebels against their own state and having taken
command of The Red Fleet's flag ship, the heroes are ready to journey into the unknown in a desperate bid
to rescue Marcus and bring down the tyrannical, and near immortal, dictator of the URRS. It is here that
the player starts their quest...
