Seasick Steve: Happy Man (Warner Brothers)

Sometime after the recording of album Dog House Music, Seasick Steve learnt a big lesson. To go more mainstream, you need to be more expansive, much like world bluesman Eric Bibb e.g. Friends (2004).

And that’s exactly who Steve Wold sounds like hear –no bad thing.

Taken from Top 10 album I Started Out With Nothin And I Still Got Most Of It Left, this is arguably the best song on it. It’s getting plenty of spins on BBC Radio 2, and why not.

Ruby Turner does the duet while K T Tunstall plays rhythm guitar, and magic is more than evident as Stevie boy keeps is gritty voice and subtlety intact, delving into a gospel southern groove.

St.Louis Slim is more like his stage songs: out and out earthy grit with a nifty beat.

The verdict : Oh yes….
