Viva La Vida’s supplement. Eight new tracks.

Coldplay, in sales terms, are back in the groove, though it has to be said, their new found direction is pretentious.

The opening track Life In Technicolor (written in the American style) is an indication they’re still thinking about stadium pop over’t pond as part of their agenda, which in itself, is rather worrying.

It’s a whopping song, very dramatic, melodic, but ultimately has little soul or conviction.

With a chance to show something really unique, they’ve missed a big chance to convert the doubters, with a gorgeous instrumental – Postcards From Far Away. Sadly it’s barely 46seconds. Had this been developed instead of being relegated to ‘filler’ status, it could have been a rare Coldplay special moment.

Glass Of Water is, in this case, just another average track, whereas Rainy Day is a comparative improvement with some nice touches of harp and string arrangement. Prospekt’s March / Poppyfields is a disaster. Martin’s limp vocals do nothing to enhance it whatsoever.

Lost+, is by far the EP’s better moment, still sounding menacing (rolling organ) and chunky, it’s a stirring gem. Jaunty Lovers In Japan continues the stadium anthemic feel boosted by masses of percussion.

Now My Feet..seems totally pointless, and is possibly the worst Coldplay song ever.

The verdict: Still not convinced.
