A sumptuous romantic comedy
all about how wonderful it is to fall in love,
<>BBetter than Chocolate follows a few hectic days in the life of Maggie, who
meets, and falls for, Kim, the new artist in town, the same day that
Maggie’s mother announces she’s getting a divorce and she and Maggie’s
brother Paul need somewhere to stay…Unfortunately Maggie’s mother is unaware
of her daughter’s sexuality, that she has dropped out of college to work in
a bookstore and that Maggie has been sleeping on a sofa at the back of the
shop where she works. No wonder Maggie is a bit stressed about the
impending visit!!
As the days unfold, unexpected friendships are made and romance blossoms
during the battle to save the bookstore from censorship, culminating in a
heart-stopping finale that will have only the hardest of hearts not
acknowledging that some things are indeed Better than Chocolate.
An extremely enjoyable film with a fabulous cast (special mention must be
made of Peter Outerbridge for his excellent portrayal of Judy), Better than
Chocolate comes highly recommended for all those romantics out there,
regardless of preference.
Extras:
Anne Wheeler’s commentary is funny and informative, showing her
obvious enthusiasm for the project that took many years to bring to the
screen. With the standard (but, it has to be acknowledged, good) trailer
being the only other special feature, one can only be thankful that her
insight into the production deserves much more than one listen.
